Our Material - The Galvanneal Steel Advantage

Paintable Galvanneal Steel – What else would you expect from a manufacturer based in the center of Atlantic Canada, surrounded by the most corrosive environment and harsh weather extremes found in North America?

What is Galvanneal Steel?

Galvanneal steel (A40 ZF120) is steel that has an iron-zinc alloy coating, formed by the following process:

  1. Cold-rolled steel is completely degreased in preparation for the galvanizing process.
  2. The steel is then passed through a hot dip bath of molten zinc.
  3. A series of air knives are used to remove the excess zinc, thereby ensuring a consistent, uniform finish.
  4. Steel is then processed through a passivation tank of chromate and phosphate.
  5. Finally, the steel is placed in an annealing furnace that completes the conversion to a zinc-iron alloy coating, resulting in galvanneal steel.

Preparation for finish paint: The spangle free coating and matte gray finish of galvanneal steel eliminates the need for pre-paint coatings. Simply wash down the surface to remove grease, dirt, and concrete splashes and it is ready for final paint finish.

ASTM Standards: Apex Galvanneal products conform to ASTM standards A-525, A-526 and A-527.

The Advantage?

Corrosion Resistance-inside and out - Unlike conventional prime painted cold rolled steel, galvanneal offers protection of all surfaces, right from the factory to the job sight. CSDMA-Dofasco testing using ASTM sanctioned guidelines has shown that resulting life expectancy of galvanneal far exceeds that of primed painted cold rolled steel. (Ref. Evaluation Rusting on Painted Steel ASTM D 610, Evaluation of Paint Subjected to Corrosive Environments ASTM D 1654).

Superior Paintability - The nature of galvanneal steel offers an inherently superior surface for applying finish paint. With its dull matte gray appearance, the galvanneal surface contains microscopic cracks and crevices which provide excellent paint adhesion, eliminating the need for expensive pre-treatment such as shot blast, etching, and prime paint. (Ref. Evaluation of Blistering of Paints ASTM D 714, Measuring Adhesion by Tape Test ASTM D 3359).

Standing up to the test of time: There is no better testament to quality and durability than the test of time. With over 25 years and thousands of projects delivered in galvanneal steel, Apex has had no problems with corrosion or paint adhesion of our product.
